Baltic Amber is a fossilized resin from pine-trees with an estimated age of 35 to 50 million years. The resin accumulated during 15 millions of years in a large delta where it was conserved in large quantities far from the oxygen of the air, which destroys the material within a few thousand years.Much later the deposits were “pushed” by glaciers from northeast to southwest and later transported by the water of the melting ice.
This organic “stone”, light and translucent, which smells when heated, has fascinated the human being for thousands of years. If somebody talks about amber it is normally about Baltic amber.90% of the worldwide amber-exploration is Baltic amber.
There are more or less 300 amber deposits on earth, including the Iberian- peninsula. These are mostly resins from Cretaceous formations with an age of about, 100 million years. Actually, there are two cretaceous sites for amber near Lisbon in Portugal.
The inclusions of animals and plants are especially interesting, because they are the best- conserved fossils on the planet.
